Adult ADHD Therapy

Julie Brown, LMFT

Always overwhelmed. Always playing catch-up?

Are you tired of feeling overwhelmed and disappointed in yourself? Do you ever feel that you could be so much more?

Often ADHD shows up as missed deadline, cluttered spaces, emotional reactivity and self-blame. You know you are capable so much more but it’s hard to follow through. Your brain won’t slow down but somehow the to-do list just keeps raining down on you!

ADHD-focused therapy can help you build systems that work for you. Together we’ll home in on your greatest needs. I’ll get to know how your brain works and we’ll develop a plan to support your well-being and productivity.

You know what you need to do - so why can’t you do it

Maybe you’re asking yourself, why does everything feel harder for me than it should? Because for some, starting isn’t the problem…staying motivated to follow through and finish is the greatest challenge. And for others, just getting started is difficult, because tasks can be mundane and terribly boring. Yet, failing to perform them can lead to tension-filled personal and professional relationships.

You’re not lazy or flawed! You may be dealing with ADHD. There are practical tools to help. I seek “to get” folks with attention challenges. And I offer support and tools for their creative and overwhelmed ADHD brains.

Perhaps you’ve been holding it together for everyone else. But now is the time to work on yourself.

Addressing ADHD behaviors and Its Impact

There are three domains that are generally helpful to address in therapy: Executive Functioning, Emotion Regulation, and Interpersonal Relationships.

Therapy can assist you in navigating and improving:

  • organization and time management.

  • impulsive behaviors and curbing hyper-focus.

  • change negative thinking patterns to more positive ones.

  • self-regulation through mindfulness and calming behaviors.

  • your relationships with your family, co-workers, and friends.

How ADHD-Focused Therapy Can Benefit You

With a supportive and nonjudgmental approach, we work together to help you embrace change and create a life that’s meaningful and fulfilling. Therapy can help you shift from chaos to clarity and from deep frustration to self-acceptance and compassion.

Some Methods I Use in Therapy:

  • Mindfulness-Based techniques helps you to slow down, be present in the world and manage your feelings and emotions.

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) identifies limiting thought, behavior and emotion patterns that intensify ADHD.

  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) encourages acceptance of painful feelings rather than suppressing them. Helps you take value-driven actions to live a meaningful life.

  • Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) provides structure to manage challenges like impulsivity, emotion dysregulation and inattention. Dialectical thinking accepts the difficulties of ADHD while actively learning to change the ineffective behaviors.

Therapy With Me

I have a warm and engaging therapeutic style. I appreciate the challenges of ADHD and I’ve had many personal and professional experiences that help me understand those who are living with ADHD.

I offer every new client a free consultation. It’s your chance to ask any questions and see what it’s like to work together.

If you decide we’re a fit, we’ll schedule an intake session which allows us to go deeper into what brings you to therapy. Usually the first three sessions with me are centered around assessment and goal setting.

Our therapy sessions are tailored to your unique challenges, offering a supportive space to gain insight, build skills, and create change.

About Juliane

Thank you for visiting my website. I’d love to hear from you. Just a little bit about me…

I’ve lived in the East Bay for most of my life and raised three adult sons in El Cerrito. In my spare time, I enjoy reading, watching a good Netflix series, choral music, playing the piano, gardening, journaling, knitting, and going on long walks with my husband of 35 years. I’ve worked in other careers, such as visual merchandising in retail and public education. With the exception of being a mom, my career as a psychotherapist has been my favorite and most meaningful job. Walking along side my clients toward healthy patterns and healing is a cherished position that I feel so lucky to hold.
